Data and Facts
There are over 120 types of tumours of the central nervous system [1], which are distinguished regarding their cellular origin, cellular composition and growth behavior.
The most common primary tumours of the CNS are meningiomas (33.4%), glioblastomas (17.6%) and pituitary tumours (12.2%).
The glioblastoma is the most aggressive brain tumour. With 54% it is the most common glioma, followed by the anaplastic astrocytoma (6.8%), the oligodendroglioma (6.6%) and the ependymoma (5.8%). [4]
In addition to primary brain tumours, in 8% of all patients with extracerebral malignant tumours brain metastases were found. [5]
